Older citizens appreciate being offered a break on pricing and stores with senior discounts are using a smart marketing strategy by doing so.

Discounts as a Marketing Strategy

There is a lot of competition among retailers, and many have adopted strategies designed to get a steady stream of customers coming through the doors. Since many retailers offer similar products, owners and managers need to come up with other incentives to create customer loyalty.

Stores with senior discounts are tapping into a large market. From 1946-1959, 76 million babies were born in the United States. The first members of this post-war Baby Boom generation are at or close to retirement age. Savvy retailers want to make sure they are getting seniors to visit their locations often. Offering a break on pricing can be a very effective marketing strategy.

Where to Find Stores with Senior Discounts

When you are interested in finding stores with senior discounts, there are a number of strategies you can use. Some stores post notices advertising special "Seniors Days" when discounts will be available. Others may include this information in flyers that are distributed to the public. You can also conduct an online search to find out which stores in your are offer a break on pricing to older citizens.

Asking for a Discount

The direct approach can also be used to get discount if you are a senior. If you are shopping at a store, you can ask whether that retailer offers senior discounts. Even if they don't advertise one, you may get the better price anyway.

In some cases you may need to sign up for a membership in order to get the discount. If you are asked to pay a fee to get a break on pricing, be sure that it makes sense to do so. If you can only see yourself shopping at that store on an occasional basis, it may not be to your advantage to pay a fee to get a discount.
