Accommodative IOL

The accommodative intraocular lens, or IOL, procedure is a new option for those with cataracts or for those who suffer from presbyopia which results in the need for glasses or bifocals to read. If you feel like your arms aren't long enough to be able to read the fine print without glasses, in most cases it's because the lens of your eye has lost its ability to focus because with age it has grown rigid. The IOL procedure surgically implants a new lens to correct the problem. This new lens allows the eye to focus on objects both near and far and is recommended for people 45 or older.

This new procedure is also used when a cataract is removed. Previously, a fixed lens would be implanted, and although the patient's eyesight was improved, they still needed bifocals or tri-focals to be able to see clearly both close up and at a distance. Now, Minnesota Eye Consultants uses the IOL instead of the fixed implant. It doesn't totally eliminate the need for glasses for every patient, but many people experience success.

Outpatient Cataract Surgery

Cataract treatment has greatly improved over the years. Recovery is faster than ever and the procedure known as phaecoemulsification can now be done has outpatient surgery and comes with more than one option. One surgical option is the IOL mentioned above, and the second is a multi-focal lens. This second option supplies corrected vision for not only distance or nearness but also for intermediate vision.

Conductive Keratoplasty

Conductive keratoplasty is a procedure used to correct presbyopia, which is a change in vision experienced by many when they reach middle age that makes it difficult to read. Minnesota Eye Consultants offers an innovative near-vision refractive correction technique to those who have experienced this age-related deterioration of their near vision. Candidates for this procedure are usually over 45 and consider wearing reading glasses a hassle.

Glaucoma

One of the leading causes of vision loss among senior citizens is the progressive, irreversible damage caused to the optic nerve by glaucoma. The good news is that this condition is treatable and with early detection, treatment can prevent serious loss of vision.

Other Procedures Offered by Minnesota Eye Consultants:

  • Corneal Transplant
  • Cosmetic Procedures
  • Implantable Collamer Lens
