Nestled on a high plateau between the Pembina and the North Saskatchewan Rivers, the Senior Citizens Club of Drayton Valley is a hub of activity for those over the age of 55.
The Town of Drayton Valley
Located in Brazeau County, Alberta, Canada, the town of Drayton Valley grew out of the oil boom of the 1950s. Today, Drayton Valley has a population of approximately 6,890 people and is home to more than 265 businesses, numerous civic groups and recreational facilities.
One of the popular recreational facilities is the Drayton Valley 55 Plus Recreation Center. The center provides a place where seniors of Brazeau County and the surrounding areas meet for fellowship, activities and fun.
Senior Citizens Club of Drayton Valley: A Brief History
An active senior citizen center, the Drayton Valley 55 Plus Recreation Center met for the first time in 1968. Through the years, the center expanded from a membership of approximately 60 to more than 225 today. Meetings once held in the Elks Hall are now held in the beautiful, spacious recreational facility owned and operated by the organization since 1998.
With two floors, the senior center includes a main floor lounge area with a kitchen. The second floor includes a main hall area and a board/meeting room.
Morning Activities at the Drayton Valley 55 Plus Recreation Center
Coffee is always ready on weekday mornings at the Senior Recreation Center. Seniors and their guests, along with local business owners, their employees and the general public, are welcome to sit and enjoy their morning coffee and a leisurely chat or stop in for a quick coffee break. Card players can enjoy playing a casual game of cards with their morning drink. Beverage choices include coffee (with free refills), tea, soda or juice between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a minimal charge of only $1.00.
During the morning hours, for a cost of $2.00, pool players can join in on a game of Snooker. The $2.00 charge includes the beverage of their choice.
Prospective members are also welcome to join the regulars for morning coffee, sit in on a game of cards or play a lively game of pool.
Monthly Pancake Breakfast: Open to All
The second Sunday of each month is a busy time at the Senior Center. Everyone is welcome to attend the all you can eat pancake breakfast buffet served from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The charge is only $6.00 and children under six are free. The buffet includes:
- Pancakes
- Ham
- Scrambled eggs
- Pork sausage - served plain or in a rich sauce
- Toast
- Coffee or tea
- Different kinds of juice
- Many kinds of syrups
- Butter or margarine
Afternoon Regular Card Game and Floor Curling Schedule
Almost everyone enjoys an engaging game of cards, including the members of the Drayton Valley club. In addition to casual games of rummy, crib and euchre, seniors enjoy weekly scheduled games of cribbage, whist and military whist.
The fee for the afternoon games, which start at 1:30, is $3.00 per player. Out of that, $1.00 goes for a beverage of choice and $1.00 toward the prizes. Players provide snacks for the groups. The card game schedule includes:
- Cribbage every Monday
- Whist on each Thursday of the month except the second Thursday
- Military Whist on the second Thursday of each month
Card tournaments are also held.
Every Tuesday and Friday at 1:00 p.m., club members compete in floor curling. The fee for this activity is $2.00 and includes a beverage.
Evenings at the Drayton Valley Senior Center
Each Thursday evening at 6:30, members get together for games of table golf. For a cost of only $2.00, which includes a beverage, players compete on impromptu teams.
Another fun event held at the senior center is potluck suppers. Scheduled at various times of the year, members get together for a night of good food, lively conversation and fun.
Tours and Bus Trips
Organized by the tour coordinator of Senior Citizens Club of Drayton Valley, scheduled trips include locations that are fun and interesting. Examples of tours include:
- Dinner shows
- Shopping trips
- Casino trips
- Music festivals
- Trips to local tourist areas such as Canyon Hot Springsor Fort McMurray.
The Senior Citizens Club of Drayton Valley is a wonderful place for anyone 55 and over to spend their leisure time socializing and enjoying activities with friends.
