From LoveToKnow Seniors

If you're looking for senior citizen games, you need only to pick up a deck of cards, a rubber ball, or a video game controller. Everything is fair "game" when you're in the mood to play!

Whether you like physical activity or mental strategy, playing games are good for the mind, body, and spirit.

Ideas for Senior Citizen Games

Board and card games continue to be popular activities for two or more players. Games bridge the generation gap and are a great way to stimulate get-togethers with family and friends.

Card Games

  • Sequence: A combination card and board game, this is an exciting and fast-paced game for strategic thinkers.
  • Phase 10: If you're a rummy fan, you'll love Phase 10. Each player must pass through each phase to win, so if you're stuck behind, things get interesting!
  • Uno: Kids and kids-at-heart love Uno. This matching game with easy rules is a great game for the whole family to play.

Board Games and Puzzles

  • Mah Jong: A tile matching game that has been played for centuries. Whether you like cats, candy or traditional Mah Jong style tiles, there is a tile set you’ll enjoy.
  • Scrabble: Match wits using your knowledge of the English language. Don't dally though-you only have one minute per turn.
  • Last Word: You don't have to be the best at coming up with words to fit the many categories-just the last!
  • Cranium: Can you draw? Act? Hum? Ace trivia? Then this is the game for you.

Puzzles are a perennial favorite of both young and old alike. Don’t think that you are limited to just the flat variety of puzzle either. Try the new 3-D puzzles of globes, castles, dual-image, and more. Share a puzzle and conversation with a friend.

Electronic Games

Don't hesitate to take the game controller away from the grandkids! Electronic and computer games often feature advanced graphics and storylines.

  • 20Q: This is an electronic game of 20 questions. The game will actually tell you what the answer is within those 20 questions. It is almost as if the little device knows what you’re thinking!
  • Wii Game Player: Is this a senior citizen game? You bet! If you can’t get out to bowl, play tennis or even rope a cow, this interactive game does it all. Just hook up this game player to your television set, pop in a game CD and let the good times roll! This game player uses a little handheld device that mimics the use of your hands. For example, to bowl, you just make a motion with your hand just like you would if you were rolling a real bowling ball. It is that easy!
  • Civilization III: History buffs will love the opportunity to build their own empires with this incredibly popular computer game.

You can also find various games on a handheld device. Choose from solitaire, spades, bridge and more. These electronic games can be found for under $10 in your local retail stores like Wal-Mart.

Try Outdoor Games, Too

You really can have fun while exercising if you make it a game. Get outside and enjoy some traditional favorites, as well as new selections.

  • Basketball: Not just a kid’s game, basketball requires skill and planning. Join a basketball league at your local YMCA or community center and have fun!
  • Golf: Play a round alone or set up a standard tee-time with friends. While many people enjoy the scenery and walking aspect of this sport, no one will think less of you if you want to cruise around in a golf cart for those last nine holes.
  • GPS treasure hunting or geocaching: This is a new game for the solitary hiker or groups of friends. All you need is a handheld GPS unit, like Garmin, Magellan or Lowrance, and you are ready to start. This technological form of treasure hunting is a great way to get exercise, meet other travelers and sometimes earn prizes. Visit the Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site for places to start treasure hunting in your area.
  • Bocce ball and horseshoes: Two of the great senior citizen games to play if you have limited grassy areas in your back or front yard. Bocce ball and horseshoe tournaments are also often held at your local park or community center. All you need to play these games is a bocce ball or horseshoe set, a pit area, and some friends that don’t mind losing to you!

Hi Darlena - maybe you can find a student's study guide of the Civil War at a teachers' supply store or online resource. For example, this site http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/lesson/lesson186.shtml features a number of different activities that you can modify to suit your patients' abilities. The Photo Sharing/Story Telling, Cost of War, even making some recipes (or just tasting!) might be good activities.

This Gettyburg site details what the soldiers did to combat boredom - you might also get some ideas from that. Many board games, whittling, music and other activities that are interesting.

It might also be interesting to rent some of Ken Burns' do...entary "The Civil War" and show segments from that, and host a discussion group. I'm sure many of your residents will have war stories of their own.

Good luck! Please let us know what you come up with.

I'm looking for activities for seniors in wheelchairs related to the Civil War. We'd like to have a "Civil War Day" and have the residents play some physical games reminicent of the Civil War that are not too taxing. Any ideas?

Hi Tyler - your Mental Vitality class sounds like a lot of fun! I'm not sure I understand your question, however - you want a website that will help you create a definition or summary for the class? What is the definition or summary for - a brochure or a flyer or something? Please give us more infomation and we'll see how we can help.
