Retirement Wishes
From LoveToKnow Seniors
For senior citizens, retirement wishes represent something to look forward to at the end of a long and satisfying life in employment. The ability to do things that were previously unavailable, either because of time or financial constraints, can be something to take the sting out of the drastic routine change that retired people inevitably go through.
Different Kinds of Retirement Wishes
Retirement wishes range from something simple as spending time with the grandchildren, to rediscovering the romance in a marriage, to traveling the world, or taking up a new pursuit entirely. There are a multitude of possibilities for the newly-retired that may not have been options during their hectic work life.
This newfound freedom can often be overwhelming, and it makes sense to take some time to review everything, to have a clear look at what people want and need out of retirement, and following up any decisions with affirmative action.
With the abundance of time during the days, weeks and months of retirement, there can be an urge to try to fill up every moment with something new and exciting. While this might look good initially, it can often be an excuse to fill the void that exists in the once-habitual routine of going to work, coming home, and socializing when possible.
The best thing would be to fill this new free time with activities that will give the most joy. Activities that perhaps the retiree has had a desire to indulge in for many years but just didn’t have the time. Perhaps retirement affords the retiree more time to spend with family and friends, who can sometimes be neglected in the rough and tumble of a career.
Whatever the desire, it is advisable for the retiree to contemplate what it is they want from retirement, and to choose new pursuits, or even old ones, sensibly and with maximum enjoyment.
Try These New Pursuits
For those seeking to fulfill their retirement wishes, there are many options available. Consider the following:
- Take up a new sport. Tennis, croquet, bocce, squash, canoeing, kite boarding, and rock climbing are just a few of the sports today's seniors are interested in.
- Learn a new language. Perhaps there was a time on vacation to France when the retiree wanted potatoes but got apples instead, or that time that they got lost in Tokyo. Whatever the reason, now is a good time to learn how to communicate with someone in a whole different culture and language.
- Make new friends. Retirement offers the chance to open up a whole new list of friendships to complement those left behind in the career world. Joining clubs, societies, or even getting involved as a volunteer in the community can reveal a whole new web of social networking that might have been previously closed off.
- Get to know the family again. One retirement wish for many is to get to know extended family more closely, the people that are usually only a part of an occasional family function.
