Jobs for Seniors

From LoveToKnow Seniors

The over-50 age group is filled with brilliant and talented individuals who can fill the gap when employers need a little extra help, so the options for jobs for seniors are wide open.

Don't rule out food and service jobs, as the hours are flexible and you'll receive reasonable pay.

After Retirement

Even if you've retired, there are many reasons you might want to work at least a few hours a week, such as:

  • To get out of the house
  • For a little extra cash
  • As a way to socialize
  • For entertainment
  • To stay active

Types of Jobs for Seniors

There is a huge variety of after-retirement professions.

Own Your Own Business

By owning your own business, you can set the hours you'd like to work and still have the freedom many seniors enjoy in retirement. The best place to start is by looking at hobbies and skills you already have. Are you a wonderful quilter? Many people sell quilts for a hefty profit. Perhaps you are good with numbers and would enjoy becoming a part-time accountant. Here are a few other ideas for businesses you can run:

  • Notary
  • Babysitting
  • Cleaning services
  • Personal shopper
  • Direct sales, such as Avon, Pampered Chef or Mary Kay
  • Wood products
  • Seamstress
  • Catering or personal chef

Part-Time Work

Many stores and restaurants have a need for part-time workers. Because your schedule is likely more flexible than someone in high school or college, this can work to your advantage when seeking job opportunities. Be certain to let the interviewer know that you are willing to work the hours they need, but also be honest about any time off you might want such as for vacations or travel.

Store Greeters

Stores such as Wal-mart, Sam's Club and Meijer's hire store greeters to say hello to customers as they enter their store and guide the customer to any sales or special items. These jobs are low key and fairly easy. If you are the type of person who enjoys speaking to others and meeting new people, then this would be a good fit for you.

Classroom Helpers

For those who love children, one job for seniors is working in a local school as an aide or classroom helper. It provides the extra income and socialization that seniors enjoy. Classroom helpers work on a wide variety of tasks, such as helping children learn to read, going over missed exam questions and working through flash cards and games. These positions are usually part time and during regular school hours, which will leave your weekends and evenings free.

How Extra Money Impacts Social Security

Before taking on a job that provides additional income, you should speak with the Social Security Administration about how much additional income you can earn before there is a reduction in your Social Security check. A job that brings in enough income to reduce your monthly benefits doesn't provide as much relief as one that brings in just enough to supplement your check.

There are many different places to seek jobs for seniors, including visiting local stores and turning in an application. However, in today's high tech world, one of the best places to being your job hunt is online. Check out employment sites such as:

You can also upload your resume to most of these websites, so that potential employers can find you if you meet their needs for workers.

What about seniors representing nutritional product companies? All seniors need to be on supplements, and there are many good companies to choose from. I am a good example of a senior who has greatly benefited from taking and selling supplements. Wth the right company, income for travel is easily achieved.
