Free Activity Ideas for the Elderly

From LoveToKnow Seniors

From gardening and concerts to birdwatching and crafts, there's a wide range of free activity ideas for the elderly.

Staying Active with Free Activities

Although a person’s physical and mental health affects his or her ability to engage in many activities, staying active and engaged in life is essential in keeping the mind and body as strong and healthy as possible.

In many cases, limited finances may prevent the elderly from staying active, as they may not be able to afford the hobbies or leisure activities of their younger years. Many of these seniors may be unaware of the many free activities that they can enjoy on their own or with family members or friends.

There are other factors in addition to a person’s physical and mental health to consider when deciding which free activities to choose. These factors include:

  • Interests
  • Mobility
  • Physical limitations

Community Libraries and Community Centers

Libraries and community centers provide many forms of free elderly entertainment.

Libraries

Many libraries offer a variety of activities and programs that are of interest to seniors. The following are some of the free programs that are offered.

  • Movies - Some libraries offer free afternoon movie showings for members. They often show movies that are made for general audiences and are suitable for families to watch together. At other times, they show movie classics, popular films or foreign films. Many libraries offer special senior movie afternoons when old black and white movies are shown.
  • Other free activities offered by many libraries that older seniors may enjoy include:
    • Concerts
    • Theatrical performances
    • Book discussion groups
    • Computer classes
    • Craft classes and groups
    • Group discussions on historical and current events

Community Centers

Community centers often offer free group activities for the elderly to enjoy. Examples of these fun activities include:

  • Exercise and fitness classes that provide low impact exercise such as yoga or tai chi. If the community center has a pool, a water exercise program for the elderly may be available.
  • Craft instruction may be provided by volunteers to seniors.
  • Group outings to local parks or areas of interest
  • Gardening groups that beautify an area within the community by planting and caring for the plants. Some areas may be in raised flower beds or pots for those elderly that have difficulty working at ground level.

Outdoor Activities

Birdwatching is increasing in popularity among seniors. This interesting outdoor activity can take place in the comfort of your own backyard, at a park, on a nature walk or anytime you are outside. A casual birdwatcher may enjoy learning to identify the different types of birds by how they look or by their song. Libraries provide books, CDs and DVDs that help the novice birdwatcher learn to identify the different species.

Additional free outdoor activities include:

  • Family picnics
  • Trips to nature or ecological centers
  • Outdoor concerts
  • Outdoor plays
  • Fishing
  • Gardening

More Free Activity Ideas for the Elderly

  • If you are a pet lover and are physically able, volunteer at an animal shelter. Elderly volunteers often take a dog for a short walk, play with a kitten or pet and brush an older cat.
  • Form an armchair travel club and visit far away places through books and movies.
  • Share your expertise with others at your senior center or nursing home.
  • Play card, board and word games with friends and family.
  • If you go on the Internet, play bingo and other online games.
  • Visit outdoor craft shows or flea markets.
  • Enjoy a leisurely stroll through a garden enjoying the beautiful sights and scents of the flowers at a local botanical garden, conservatory or other public garden.

I have recently started a new job as an Activities Co-ordinator at a Resindential/Nursing Home in Gommersal, West Yorkshire. I'm absolutely loving every minute of my work, but I'd love more ideas for outings if anyone out there has any, especially if they're a little unusual.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Yours,

Sandra Marsden
